NEWS DESKFor the first time in the history of Bangladesh public opinion was solicited on the national budget presented by Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed outside the parliament in the wake of the July Uprising.
His budget speech for the upcoming fiscal year 2025-26 was broadcast simultaneously on state broadcaster BTV and other private media on Monday, June 2.
The budget speech and other documents have been published on the websites of the Ministry of Finance and the National Board of Revenue (NBR). Anyone can give their opinion on the proposed budget by accessing the website of the Ministry of Finance. The government will finalize the budget after receiving the opinion.
According to sources in the Ministry of Finance, the link 'Opinion on the National Budget 2025-26' will be available by accessing the website of the Finance Department (https://mof.portal.gov.bd). By accessing the link, the commenter has the opportunity to give a one-thousand-word opinion on any issue of the proposed budget by providing the name, e-mail, and mobile phone number.
The Finance Division will take opinions in this way until June 19. After receiving the opinions, the Ministry of Finance will finalise the draft budget by making some additions and subtractions. In this case, the Finance Ministry will hold a meeting among itself, but will not hold any meeting with any other stakeholders.
The budget will be in the form of a presidential ordinance after approval from the Advisory Council meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on June 22. The new budget will be implemented from July 1.
During the tenure of the elected government, the budget was presented in the National Assembly. Later, the proposed budget was discussed in the parliament throughout the month. The budget for the new fiscal year was passed in the parliament at the end of June.
Since there is no parliament this time, there is no opportunity for discussion or debate in the parliament. Therefore, after announcing the budget, the Finance Ministry is taking opinions from citizens on the proposed budget.
