NEWS DESKBangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami chief Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has extended greetings to the Hindu community ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations. He also called on the authorities to ensure adequate security during the festival, emphasizing Bangladesh’s longstanding tradition of communal harmony.
In a statement released by Jamaat’s central publicity wing on Friday, September 26, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman conveyed his sincere greetings to the Hindu community on the occasion of Sharadiya Durga Puja, the largest annual religious festival for Bangladeshi Hindus, set to begin on September 28.
He described Bangladesh as a global role model for interfaith harmony, stating:
“Around the world, Bangladesh is recognized and praised as a shining example of communal harmony. People of all faiths—Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians—have been living side by side in peace, celebrating their religious festivals with joy and freedom for generations.”
The Jamaat leader noted that international observers and diplomats have often praised Bangladesh’s atmosphere of tolerance and mutual respect.
“Several years ago, Australian High Commissioner HE Greg Wilcock remarked that Bangladesh is a nation of communal harmony. The way people of different religions support one another during Puja and Eid is admirable,” he said.
“EU Ambassador William Hanna also stated that such examples of peaceful coexistence are rare in the world.”
He stressed that this legacy of harmony is not only a source of national pride, but a cultural foundation that must be preserved and strengthened.
“Durga Puja should further strengthen the bonds of tolerance and harmony in our national life. I pray for the peace, prosperity, and happiness of all communities in Bangladesh.”
Dr. Rahman also called on law enforcement agencies to ensure full security so that the Hindu community can observe the festivities peacefully and without fear, just as in previous years.
He concluded with an appeal to all levels of Jamaat activists and the peace-loving public to extend their full cooperation in ensuring a smooth and inclusive Durga Puja celebration.
