NEWS DESKIn an immediate reaction following the signing of the July Charter, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has emphasized the need to ensure its legal foundation and a clear implementation process.
Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Nayeb-e-Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, stated, “Through today’s signing, we have agreed on the contents of the Charter, but the legal basis for it is still pending. The government must ensure that promptly.”
He made these remarks while speaking to journalists on Friday evening (October 17), following the signing of the Charter.
Meanwhile, Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad told the media, “We engaged in continuous discussions for five days. In the concluding session, Professor Ali Riaz, Vice President of the Consensus Commission, gave a summary. He said a set of recommendations regarding the implementation process would be prepared — we would receive a draft, and it would also be sent to the government. But despite repeated efforts to communicate with them, we did not receive it. Even today, we raised this issue. As a result, the implementation process remains unclear to the nation.”
He added, “We’ve said this must have legal backing. Without legal authority, the spirit of the Charter — the revolution, the reforms achieved through consensus — will remain symbolic and uncertain. We have therefore insisted that an executive order must be issued, and a public referendum held to make it sustainable.”
Dr. Taher also stressed the importance of legal recognition, saying, “Although the Charter has been signed, its effective implementation hasn’t taken place due to a lack of legal status. The principles and vision agreed upon through extensive discussions in the National Consensus Commission meetings must be swiftly implemented by the government.”
He warned that any delay or hesitation by the government would be considered “a national betrayal akin to a betrayal of the July Charter,” which could lead to new political complications.
