Chief Adviser to Decide Soon on Referendum Issue: Asif Nazrul

Law Adviser Asif Nazrul has said that Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus will make a decision soon regarding the proposed referendum. He stated that there is intense disagreement among political parties over the issue, and the Chief Adviser will decide on it — but a decision is expected very soon.

He made the remarks on Thursday (October 30) during a briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.

Referring to discussions within the Advisory Council about political disunity, Asif Nazrul said, “After long rounds of talks, the current disunity among political parties is disappointing. Earlier, disputes were over issues of substance, but now there is disagreement over the referendum itself. In such a situation, the parties are taking increasingly confrontational positions.”

He further said, “If any political party tries to impose its unilateral decision on the government, then where does the spirit of July go? Whatever anyone says, the election will be held in the first half of February. However, ensuring a fair electoral environment is not only the government’s responsibility—it is also the responsibility of the political parties.”
