BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the neighboring country must stop displaying dominance over Bangladesh.

He made the comment on Saturday (15 November) while speaking to journalists after inspecting the rubber dam on the Mahananda River in Rehaichar area of Chapainawabganj.

At that time, Mirza Fakhrul said, “If they want, the neighboring country can maintain a good relationship with us. They helped us in 1971, and even now they can cooperate with Bangladesh if they wish. But unfortunately, during the previous government’s tenure, they did not do so. Instead, they put the country in danger in various ways.”

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also said, “The previous government negotiated with India many times and even compared the relationship to that of a husband and wife. This caused the relationship between the two countries to deteriorate. Relations must be maintained to protect the dignity of the country, but it must be based on equality. The nation’s interests must come first.”

He further said, “A social movement must be built to demand a fair share of water in the Padma River basin. It will be easier to fulfill this demand once an elected government is in place.”

During the inspection, present were BNP Chairperson’s adviser and former Member of Parliament for Chapainawabganj-3 Harunur Rashid; another adviser to the BNP Chairperson and former MP for Chapainawabganj-1 Professor Shahjahan Mia; BNP Central Executive Committee Assistant Secretary for Industry and Commerce and former MP for Chapainawabganj-2 Md. Aminul Islam; along with other BNP and affiliated organization leaders and workers.

It may be noted that in the afternoon, the BNP organized a public rally at the Nawabganj Government College ground demanding a fair share of water for the Padma River basin. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is scheduled to attend the rally as the chief guest.
