Earthquake Kills 7 in Four Districts, Over 200 Injured Across Bangladesh

A powerful earthquake that jolted Dhaka and several parts of the country on Friday (21 November) has so far claimed seven lives. Three deaths have been reported in Dhaka, one in Gazipur, one in Narayanganj, and two in Narsingdi. More than two hundred people across the country were injured, while cracks have appeared in multiple buildings and structures.

The quake struck at 10:38 am. According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, it measured 5.7 in magnitude, with its epicenter in Madhabdi, Narsingdi. However, the US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the tremor at 5.5 on the Richter scale, also locating the epicenter in Narsingdi. The quake caused widespread casualties and structural damage nationwide.

Dhaka
In Old Dhaka’s Kasaituli area of Bangshal, three people were killed when the railing of a five-story building collapsed. Bangshal Police Inspector (Investigation) Md Sohel Hossain confirmed the incident around 11:15 am.

The deceased were identified as Rafiqul Islam, a student of Mitford Medical College’s 52nd batch; Haji Abdur Rahim (47); and Meherab Hossain Rimon (12). Their bodies were kept at Mitford Hospital morgue.
Locals said the three were walking along the road when the railing suddenly gave way during the tremor, killing them on the spot. Fire service and police personnel later reached the scene.

Narayanganj
In Rupganj, Narayanganj, a wall collapse killed a newborn named Fatema. The baby’s mother, Kulsum Begum, and neighbor Jesmin Begum were injured.
The incident occurred at Islam Bagh in Golakandail Union. Witnesses said the wall collapsed while they were passing by, killing the newborn instantly. Locals rescued the injured and took them to a nearby private hospital.

Inspector Mokhlesur Rahman of Bhulta Police Outpost confirmed the incident.

Gazipur
In Kaliganj’s Nagari Union of Gazipur, Sujit Das (38) died after falling from a tree during the quake. He was taken to Kaliganj Government Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.

Two domes of the Shadargaon Jame Mosque tilted due to the quake, and cracks appeared in multiple buildings, including the newly constructed four-story Shadargaon School.

Narsingdi
Two people were killed and around 100 injured across six upazilas in Narsingdi.
In Sadar upazila’s Gabtoli area, a child named Omar (12) died when the wall of an under-construction building collapsed.
In Palash upazila’s Malita village, another victim, Kajom Ali (75), died after being trapped under a collapsed wall.

Superintendent of Police Menhajul Alam confirmed receiving reports of widespread injuries and one death so far, adding that police remain on alert to assist the public.
