BNP’s acting chairperson Tarique Rahman has described the shooting of Sharif Osman Bin Hadi—convener of Inqilab Moncho and independent candidate for Dhaka-8—as an “arrogant attempt” to endanger the nation’s existence and public order.
He made the remarks while speaking virtually on Friday, 12 December, at a BNP seminar titled “Plan to Build the Nation,” held at the Krishibid Institute in Dhaka’s Khamarbari.
Condemning the incident, Tarique Rahman said that everyone who believes in democracy must strongly protest the attack. He alleged that another BNP candidate had previously been shot with the intent to kill—part of a broader scheme to destabilize the country’s political environment. According to Tarique, a certain group is openly threatening to sabotage the election and is desperate to disrupt peace and order. The attack on Hadi, he said, is evidence of that effort.
He called on all political forces that believe in democracy, oppose fascism and stand for national sovereignty to unite more strongly. He urged party members to stay away from rumors and misinformation, and assured full cooperation with the administration and investigators in identifying the perpetrators.
“We must build a united resistance against injustice to restore the country’s lost democracy,” Tarique Rahman said.
