Bangladesh and Japan have signed an agreement on the transfer of defense equipment and technology, marking a significant step forward in bilateral military cooperation.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday at a military cantonment between the governments of Bangladesh and Japan, according to a statement released by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on its official Facebook page.
On behalf of Bangladesh, the agreement was signed by Lieutenant General SM Kamrul Hasan, Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division. The Japanese side was represented by the Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh, His Excellency Saida Shinichi. The signing of the agreement elevates the strategic partnership and long-standing friendship between the two countries to a new level.
Sources from the Armed Forces Division said the agreement was finalized as a result of sustained and coordinated efforts by both sides since 2023. The defense pact reflects deep mutual trust, a shared strategic vision, and close cooperation between Bangladesh and Japan, achieved through what was described as the interim government of Bangladesh’s forward-looking and effective diplomacy.
The agreement is expected to accelerate Bangladesh’s defense modernization process. It has been concluded in full compliance with the principles of the United Nations Charter and aims to establish an institutional framework for the acquisition of advanced defense equipment and technology, as well as joint research and development, in support of international peace and security and the protection of Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty.
The deal is also expected to further deepen the strategic partnership between Bangladesh and Japan in South Asia, contributing to regional stability and global security. The historic agreement will facilitate increased exchanges of military experts between the two countries, which is expected to play a vital role in enhancing Bangladesh’s defense capabilities and implementing future strategic plans.
Additionally, the agreement is anticipated to significantly strengthen strategic relations and expand cooperation in the military and defense sectors between the two nations.
