The government has removed Mohammad Tajul Islam from the post of Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) and appointed Advocate Md. Aminul Islam as his replacement.
The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs issued a gazette notification in this regard on Monday morning.
According to the notification, signed by Solicitor Md. Manjurul Hossain, Md. Aminul Islam has been appointed as Chief Prosecutor to conduct cases of the tribunal until further order. At the same time, the appointment order of Tajul Islam, who was appointed on September 5, 2024, has been cancelled.
Tajul Islam had served for about one and a half years in the reconstituted International Crimes Tribunal. Under his leadership, ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, the prosecution submitted 24 formal charges over crimes against humanity allegedly committed in July and August of 2024.
The trial proceedings of these cases are currently underway at Tribunal-1 and Tribunal-2. Verdicts have already been delivered in three cases, while two more cases are awaiting judgment.
