The government has decided to purchase diesel and petrol from Saudi Arabia on an emergency basis. The information was disclosed in a message from the Ministry of Energy on Sunday.
According to the statement, the government is buying 100,000 metric tons of diesel and 25,000 metric tons of gasoline (petrol) from Saudi Arabia outside the existing agreement due to urgent needs. The total cost of the purchase has been estimated at around Tk 2,000 crore.
Meanwhile, the government has withdrawn the rationing system for the sale of fuel across the country. Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat in the morning, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit said the limit on fuel sales to consumers and the supply restrictions at filling stations have been lifted.
However, despite the withdrawal of rationing, the fuel crisis has not yet eased. According to those involved in the sector, fuel supply from depots has still not returned to normal.
The state minister told journalists that restrictions on fuel have been removed as an oil tanker has reached Chattogram. He also said the government will not increase fuel prices as long as the economy can withstand the current pressure.
