Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Mirza Abbas is showing signs of improvement while undergoing treatment at Singapore General Hospital, according to Social Welfare Minister A Z M Zahid Hossain.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Zahid said he had consulted with doctors, who reported that various medical parameters are giving positive signs. “His condition is improving, Alhamdulillah. Since it involves the brain, it will take some time,” he said, requesting prayers for Abbas’s recovery.
Mirza Abbas was flown to Singapore on March 15 via an air ambulance from Dhaka for advanced treatment.
His Assistant Private Secretary, Mizanur Rahman Sohel, said that doctors helped Abbas sit on a chair from his bed around 10:00am on Monday, which he described as a positive development. “He is slowly able to speak. He remains under close observation,” Sohel added, urging the public to pray for him.
Family members, including his wife Afroza Abbas and son Yasir Abbas, are staying by his side at the hospital.
Earlier, on March 13, Abbas underwent a four-hour brain surgery at Evercare Hospital Dhaka, following the recommendation of a medical board formed by specialist doctors. He remained in the ICU for two days after the operation before being transferred to Singapore.
He was first taken to Evercare Hospital on March 11 after falling ill during an iftar gathering.
