Jamaat-Led Alliance to Hold Protest Rally in Dhaka Demanding Referendum Implementation

An 11-party electoral alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is set to hold a protest rally and procession in the capital Saturday, demanding implementation of the referendum verdict.

The demonstration will take place on Saturday afternoon at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, a key political gathering point in Dhaka.

The announcement was made on Thursday by Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad following a liaison committee meeting of the 11-party alliance held at a residence in Gulshan.

Among others present at the meeting were Akhtar Hossain, member secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP); Ahmad Abdul Kader, Secretary General of Khelafat MajlishAtaullah Amin of Bangladesh Khelafat MajlishRashed Prodhan, spokesperson of the Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (JAGPA); and Mostafizur Rahman Iran, chairman of the Bangladesh Labour Party.

Speaking to reporters, Hamidur Rahman Azad said that if the government fails to resolve the referendum issue in parliament, the alliance will proceed with the 5:00 pm protest rally and march at Baitul Mukarram.

The opposition alliance also plans to build public support through outreach campaigns and leaflet distribution. In addition, seminars and symposiums will be organized focusing on the implementation of the referendum and the “July Charter.”

Leaders warned that if the government continues to ignore public opinion, they may be compelled to announce stricter protest programs in the coming days.
