A female activist of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Sauda Sumi, has been released on bail after being detained over allegations of posting anti-state and anti-government content on Facebook.

On Tuesday, Bhola Judicial Magistrate Court Judge Sourav Roy Mithu granted her bail.

Sumi was detained by police from her residence on Sunday night and was produced before the court the following day. She is a resident of Ward No. 6 of Bhola পৌরসভা and the wife of Abdul Halim Bablur.

According to Bhola Superintendent of Police Md. Shahidullah Kawsar, she was detained over allegations of posting content critical of the state and government on Facebook. He claimed that during preliminary interrogation, she admitted to the allegations. She was later sent to court under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The police official also stated that at the time of detention, they were not aware of her affiliation with Jamaat-e-Islami.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami criticized the police action. At a press conference organized by the district unit on Monday, district secretary Harun Or Rashid alleged that Sumi was arrested from her home without any documented evidence.

He further noted that Sumi has a three-year-old speech-impaired child, emphasizing that the mother’s presence is crucial for the child’s care.
