Family members and fellow activists of Abu Sayeed, who was killed during the July mass uprising, have expressed dissatisfaction with the court’s verdict in his murder case, announced on Thursday afternoon.
Reacting to the judgment, Abu Sayeed’s father, Mokbul Hossain, said he was not satisfied with the outcome. “The court has sentenced a constable to death, but it was higher-level officers who gave the order to open fire. A proper investigation must be conducted against them. The number of death sentences should be increased,” he stated. He also added that the family would decide on filing an appeal after consulting with his other sons.
Sayeed’s mother, Monowara Begum, also voiced disappointment. “My son did not receive proper justice. Why were there not more death sentences? My heart is not at peace,” she said.
Arman Hossain, a witness in the case, claimed that several accused involved in attacks on students on July 11, 12, and 16 received lenient punishment. “The verdict did not meet expectations. We hope the honorable court will reconsider the judgment,” he said.
Speaking at Begum Rokeya University, one of Sayeed’s fellow activists, Shamsur Rahman Sumon, alleged that some individuals responsible for serious crimes were given light sentences. He expressed hope that the court would review those decisions and demanded swift execution of the highest penalties awarded. He also criticized the reduced punishment for Chhatra League leader Pomel Barua, who he claimed was involved in armed attacks on students during the movement.
Another activist, Ashikur Rahman Ashik, described the incident as a “clear case of police killing.” He alleged that Assistant Commissioner Imran had instigated violence by throwing stones and directing attacks on students, yet was excluded from the case. “We hope the court will take this matter into consideration,” he added.
The case of Abu Sayeed has drawn widespread attention, with ongoing calls for justice and accountability from his family and supporters.
