The opposition alliance staged another walkout on the 12th day of the first session of the 13th National Parliament, protesting what they described as the passage of “anti-people” bills. The lawmakers left the parliament chamber at 5:56 PM on Thursday.
Before the walkout, opposition leader and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, said multiple bills had been passed ignoring the opposition’s reasonable objections. “We do not want to take responsibility for these bills. That is why we have decided to walk out of Parliament,” he stated.
Following his remarks, opposition members of Parliament left the chamber one by one.
During the session, several ordinances issued by the interim government were passed without changes. At the same time, some ordinances were repealed and replaced with new bills.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said the opposition had objections to various provisions in several proposed laws. These include the Local Government (Municipality) Amendment Bill, District Council (Amendment) Bill 2026, National Human Rights Commission (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, Supreme Court Secretariat (Repeal) Bill, Supreme Court Judges Appointment (Repeal) Bill, and the National Freedom Fighters Council (Amendment) Bill.
