Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has described Pohela Boishakh as a unique symbol of the nation’s history, culture, and identity, emphasizing its enduring significance in the lives of Bengali people for centuries.

In a message issued on Monday marking the Bengali New Year, Tarique Rahman extended heartfelt greetings and congratulations to the people of the country as well as Bengali-speaking communities around the world. He bid farewell to the year 1432 and welcomed the arrival of the New Year 1433.

The Prime Minister highlighted the deep connection between Pohela Boishakh and the region’s agriculture, nature, and agrarian economy. He noted that even in today’s era of advanced information technology, farmers continue to align their crop cycles with natural patterns. He added that the festival revitalizes the thousand-year-old traditions, folk culture, and values of Bengal.

He also pointed to traditional celebrations such as fairs, cultural processions, and Halkhata ceremonies, saying these reflect the rich diversity of Bengali culture and strengthen unity among people. According to him, the New Year brings renewed hope and possibilities, blending nature’s rejuvenation with human optimism to create a vibrant festive atmosphere.

Referring to recent political developments, Tarique Rahman said that following the end of what he described as one and a half decades of authoritarian rule, a new democratic government began its journey after winning the national election held on February 12. He stated that the government has already launched various initiatives aimed at improving the living standards of people from all walks of life.

Among the measures mentioned were the introduction of family cards, sports cards, canal excavation programs, and financial assistance schemes for imams, muezzins, khatibs, and religious leaders of other faiths. He also announced the launch of a farmer card program from the first day of the Bengali New Year, expressing hope that it would play a transformative role in the country’s agricultural economy.

The Prime Minister expressed optimism that the practice of religious and social values—along with tolerance, generosity, and harmony—would further strengthen democracy and reinforce coexistence among diverse opinions. He also stressed the importance of peace, empathy, and mutual respect at a time when the world is facing multiple crises and conflicts.

Concluding his message, he urged everyone to rise above narrowness and self-interest and work toward the greater good of humanity. He called on the nation to leave behind past disappointments and move forward with renewed determination.

He wished that the New Year would bring happiness, peace, and prosperity to all and once again extended his warm greetings to the people.
