Law Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has informed Parliament that the ruling party is taking steps to form a special committee to review and propose amendments to the Constitution.

Speaking during Wednesday’s session of the National Parliament, the minister said the government has proposed forming a 17-member committee for this purpose.

He emphasized that constitutional discussion has become widespread in Bangladesh, extending “even to tea stalls,” and said the government wants to bring that spirit of debate into Parliament as well.

As part of this effort, the proposed committee will be formed under Rule 266 of the parliamentary rules of procedure.

According to the minister, a preliminary list of 12 members has already been prepared. This list includes representatives from the BNP, Gono Odhikar Parishad, Gono Sanghati, the Bangladesh Jatiya Party, as well as independent members.

Of these 12 members, seven are from the BNP, while the remaining five will come from other parties and independent MPs.

Addressing opposition representation, the minister noted that based on proportional calculations, opposition members account for around 26 percent. Accordingly, the government has requested the opposition to nominate five members for the committee.

He added that if the opposition submits the names by Thursday, the committee can be formed promptly. The government aims to move forward with constitutional amendments and the proposed “July Charter” once the committee is in place.
