Bangladesh is moving forward with plans to construct a second Padma Bridge, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam announced on Monday.
The minister made the remarks at the Secretariat following a preparatory meeting on ensuring safe travel during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha holidays.
Responding to questions about whether a second Padma Bridge at the Daulatdia-Paturia point could help reduce road accidents, the minister said the government has already taken the initiative.
“Yes, plans have been made. There are three proposals for the second Padma Bridge. The first proposal is on the route you mentioned. We are moving toward constructing the second Padma Bridge,” he said.
He added that the feasibility study for the project has already been completed and discussions are underway regarding financing.
“We are considering the financing arrangements and holding discussions. Other preliminary preparations are also progressing,” the minister said.
According to Sheikh Rabiul Alam, the government is currently evaluating funding options while continuing advance preparations for the major infrastructure project.
