Zakir Hossain, alias Sohail Rana, the prime suspect in the brutal rape and murder of seven-year-old Ramisa Akhter in the capital's Pallabi, has a long-standing history of notorious criminal activities.

Speaking at a press conference at the DMP Media Center on Friday, Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) Chief Additional Commissioner Md. Shafikul Islam stated that Rana’s past conduct and character were highly depraved. He assured that the investigation report of this heinous murder would be submitted to the court swiftly. The discovery of Ramisa's body from a Pallabi residence last Tuesday sparked nationwide outrage, leading to Rana's eventual arrest in Narayanganj, where he subsequently gave a confessional statement in court.

In-depth details reveal that Rana, a native of Maheshchandrapur in Natore, was a notorious local thief who frequently evaded justice due to the political backing of influential Awami League leaders at the time. His personal life was equally scandalous; his first marriage collapsed after he engaged in an extramarital affair with his younger brother's wife. Despite marrying a second time, his heavy addiction to drugs, online gambling, and soaring debts forced him to flee his hometown four years ago, abandoning his elderly parents and children. Expressing deep resentment, his mother and younger sister, Joli Begum, have disowned him and demanded the highest legal punishment for his barbaric act. After moving to Dhaka, Rana worked as a rickshaw mechanic in Mirpur but was repeatedly evicted from various places due to his severe drug abuse. He had moved into his final sublet residence just 15 days before committing this horrific crime.
