The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide financing and support worth $1.4 billion for four major projects in Bangladesh aimed at strengthening economic management, social protection, and infrastructure development.

A bilateral agreement signing ceremony between the ADB and the Economic Relations Division (ERD) was held on Sunday evening at the InterContinental Hotel in Dhaka.

Speaking at the event, Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said that amid the ongoing crisis caused by the recent conflict in the Middle East, the ADB’s prompt and timely financial response would play a crucial role in implementing Bangladesh’s development plans.

He praised the ADB for its swift support, describing it as highly commendable among multilateral development partners.

Welcoming the ADB President and the high-level delegation, the minister said that the ADB President is scheduled to meet the Prime Minister on Monday, during which an integrated nationwide development project will be announced.

He added that the long-term initiative aligns with the current government’s election manifesto and development agenda and is expected to make a significant contribution to improving the livelihoods of people across the country.

The minister also expressed optimism that the longstanding partnership between the Bangladesh government and the ADB would continue to play a stronger role in achieving sustainable economic and social development.

According to officials at the event, the agreement will ensure financing and cooperation for four major projects focused on economic management, social resilience, and infrastructure development.

The projects include:

  • Strengthening Economic Management and Governance Program (Subprogram 2)
  • Second Strengthening Social Resilience Program (Subprogram 2)
  • South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Dhaka-Sylhet Corridor Road Project
