Two regional executive officers from Dhaka’s city corporations have been relieved of their duties over alleged negligence in waste management, while six additional senior officials face possible disciplinary action following an inspection ordered by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
On Friday afternoon, the prime minister personally toured several areas of the capital to assess the overall condition of waste management and urban cleanliness. During the visit, he expressed dissatisfaction after observing inadequate waste removal and sanitation conditions in multiple locations.
As a result, he directed authorities to remove two regional executive officers from the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) from their current responsibilities and initiate administrative proceedings against them.
Mir Shahe Alam, who accompanied the prime minister during the inspection, told reporters that piles of garbage and waste were found along roads in areas including Hatirpool, Elephant Road, Green Road, Farmgate, and Karwan Bazar. The findings prompted the immediate decision to temporarily relieve the two officials of their duties.
According to Alam, the officers have been placed under the Ministry of Public Administration, where departmental proceedings will be initiated against them for alleged negligence and failure to perform their responsibilities.
The inspection team included State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam, DSCC Administrator Md. Abdus Salam, BNP National Executive Committee Special Secretary Muhammad Belayet Hossain, and the Prime Minister’s Private Secretary-2, Advocate Mehedul Islam.
Alam further stated that the prime minister has ordered action within 48 hours against six additional senior officials from the two city corporations. These include the chief executive officers, chief waste management officers, and chief health officers of both DNCC and DSCC.
