Bangladesh has called on the United Kingdom to simplify and expedite visa processing for Bangladeshi seafarers while seeking increased British investment in the country's maritime sector.
The appeal was made by Shipping Minister Robiul Alam during a bilateral meeting with UK Secretary of State for Transport Heidi Alexander in London on Thursday, according to a statement issued by Bangladesh's Department of Information.
At the outset of the meeting, Alam conveyed the greetings of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to his British counterpart. He said Bangladesh's current government assumed office through a free, fair, inclusive and peaceful election backed by strong public support and remains committed to strengthening democracy, good governance, accountability and the rule of law.
Highlighting the long-standing historical and multifaceted relationship between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom, the minister thanked the British government for its support for Bangladesh's democratic transition.
He requested the UK's cooperation in accelerating the issuance of UK Transit Visa (OKTB) and other transit and seafarer-related visas for Bangladeshi crew members serving on international vessels.
Alam also urged greater British investment in Bangladesh's shipbuilding industry, marine engineering, port development, maritime transport, and port-based industries. He called for expanded joint ventures, technology transfer and public-private partnerships, while emphasizing the importance of boosting bilateral trade and investment.
The shipping minister said the government remains committed to implementing the Hong Kong International Convention to ensure internationally recognized standards in the country's ship recycling industry. He noted that 27 of Bangladesh's 42 ship recycling yards have already achieved compliance with international standards, while efforts are underway to upgrade the remaining facilities.
Alam reaffirmed Bangladesh's support for the International Maritime Organization's global initiatives to combat climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
"Although Bangladesh is not a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, the country continues to work closely with the international community to promote environmentally friendly technologies, green growth and a sustainable maritime transport system," he said.
Both sides expressed their commitment to further expanding cooperation in transport, shipping, railways, port development, trade and investment, along with other areas of mutual interest.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Alam invited the UK transport secretary to visit Bangladesh.
