Prime Minister Tarique Rahman Scheduled to Visit India Next Week for High-Stakes Summit

Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to undertake his maiden official visit to New Delhi in the latter half of next week, marking his first bilateral foreign trip to India since assuming office.

 Preparations are underway in both capitals for the two-day diplomatic mission, during which Prime Minister Rahman is scheduled to hold a summit meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to navigate a complex array of trade, energy, border security, and regional connectivity matters.

The landmark visit comes amidst a major recalibration of South Asian geopolitics following the August 2024 mass uprising. High on the agenda will be the formal extradition request for ousted leader Sheikh Hasina, recently sentenced by the International Crimes Tribunal, as well as negotiations regarding the renewal of the 1996 Ganges Water Sharing Treaty expiring in December. Following recent high-level contacts—including Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman's trip to New Delhi in April—this summit is widely viewed by diplomats as a critical test for forging a pragmatic, modernized bilateral framework between Bangladesh and India.
