New President to be Sworn In at Bangabhaban on August 21 at 7:30 PM: Chief Whip

The oath-taking ceremony for the new President of Bangladesh will be held at Bangabhaban this coming Friday (August 21). This was confirmed by the Chief Whip of the National Parliament, Nurul Islam Moni, while speaking to journalists following a meeting of government-aligned members of parliament at the Parliament Secretariat on Wednesday afternoon (August 19).

The Chief Whip stated that votes have been sought from all members of parliament in favor of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. He emphasized the government's commitment to institutionalizing democracy, describing the upcoming presidential election on Thursday (August 20) as a "momentous occasion" that will mark a new journey in history. During the briefing, he officially announced that the oath-taking ceremony for the country’s 23rd President will take place at Bangabhaban on Friday evening at 7:30 PM.

It is noteworthy that the former President, Md. Shahabuddin, resigned on July 24. Following his resignation, as per constitutional procedures, the Speaker of the 13th National Parliament, Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, assumed the duties of the Acting President. Subsequently, the Election Commission announced the schedule for the 23rd presidential election. According to the official schedule, voting for the presidential election will be held on Thursday (August 20). A total of 349 members of parliament are scheduled to cast their votes in the parliamentary chamber between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
