The Bangladesh government has formed a new Cabinet committee to oversee the country’s fertilizer management and supply operations, with the aim of ensuring adequate distribution to farmers and providing guidance to the Ministry of Agriculture.

The Cabinet Division announced the formation of the committee in a notification issued Tuesday. The order, signed by Cabinet Division Additional Secretary Mohammad Humayun Kabir, will take effect immediately.

Abu Zafar Mohammad Zahid Hossain, Minister for Women and Children Affairs and Social Welfare, has been appointed convener of the committee.

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu and State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam have been appointed as members.

Under the government order, the committee will regularly monitor fertilizer collection, storage, distribution and supply conditions across the country.

It will also oversee the process of appointing fertilizer dealers and assess whether fertilizer is reaching farmers through the appropriate distribution channels.

The committee will be responsible for advising and providing necessary directions to the Ministry of Agriculture if problems arise in fertilizer management or supply.

The move comes as the government seeks closer oversight of the fertilizer supply chain, a critical component of agricultural production and food security in Bangladesh.

The Ministry of Agriculture will provide the necessary secretarial support for the committee’s activities.
