Bangladesh Reiterates Support for Palestinian State with East Jerusalem as Capital

Bangladesh has reiterated its call for the establishment of an independent, sovereign and viable Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, while reaffirming its strong support for Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations.

Foreign Affairs State Minister Shama Obaid Islam made the remarks on Thursday while attending a high-level ministerial meeting of the Global Alliance for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, held on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly at the UN headquarters in New York.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said this in a statement issued on Friday.

Speaking at the meeting, Shama Obaid stressed the need for the effective and speedy implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2803. She also called for ensuring Palestinian ownership of the process and clear accountability throughout its implementation.

The state minister urged the international community to prevent any form of forced displacement and demographic change in Gaza. She also called for an immediate halt to the expansion of Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories.

She further urged the global community to ensure legal protection and uninterrupted funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which provides assistance to Palestinian refugees.

Ministers, representatives of member states and senior officials from international organisations attended the UN meeting, where participants discussed concrete and effective measures to advance the implementation of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
