Bangladesh, US Sign Strategic Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement

Bangladesh and the United States have signed a strategic civil nuclear cooperation agreement aimed at promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Rehan Asad, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Science and Technology, signed the agreement on behalf of Bangladesh, while Jacob Helberg, the US Under Secretary for Economic Affairs, signed on behalf of the United States.

The information was disclosed Saturday by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) Media Cell on its verified Facebook page.

According to diplomatic sources, the agreement was signed as part of the continuation of a nuclear cooperation initiative that began in 1981 during the administration of President Ziaur Rahman.

The agreement is expected to strengthen technical exchanges between Dhaka and Washington and expand scientific cooperation in areas including nuclear safety and civilian energy.

It is also expected to facilitate greater cooperation between the two countries in the peaceful and civilian applications of nuclear technology.
