Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi has met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh.
The meeting took place shortly after Trivedi held a series of high-level meetings in Dhaka, including discussions with Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed. Trivedi travelled to New Delhi following those meetings and met Modi the next day.
According to the Indian High Commission, Trivedi sought Modi’s guidance on further strengthening the “multifaceted and enduring” relationship between India and Bangladesh through a constructive and people-centric approach.
Diplomatic sources said the discussions included the current state of Bangladesh-India relations and the possibility of a future visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to India. Bangladesh has also raised several bilateral issues with New Delhi, including its request for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting in Dhaka, Trivedi expressed confidence that many outstanding issues between the two countries could be resolved if Tarique Rahman and Narendra Modi meet.
“When the two leaders sit together, there is no question that cannot be resolved,” Trivedi said, while adding that there was no need to rush the proposed visit and that both sides should be given adequate time for preparations.
Trivedi has repeatedly emphasized the importance of improving people-to-people ties and maintaining a positive and forward-looking relationship between the two neighboring countries. During his earlier meeting with Tarique Rahman, he conveyed India’s interest in working with Bangladesh in a “positive, constructive and forward-looking” manner.
His appointment itself was viewed as a notable move by New Delhi. India appointed Trivedi, a veteran politician and former Union minister, as its High Commissioner to Bangladesh in April 2026. Unlike a career diplomat, Trivedi has a long political background and joined Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party in 2021.
The recent diplomatic activity comes amid efforts by both countries to improve ties following several years of political and diplomatic tensions. The two sides are also discussing trade, travel, energy, security and other areas of bilateral cooperation.
Trivedi has said that India and Bangladesh share not only a border but also common interests and aspirations, stressing the importance of continued dialogue and engagement.
The timing of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s potential visit to India has not been finalized. However, India has previously extended an invitation for a bilateral visit, while Rahman has also been invited to attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi in his capacity as chair of BIMSTEC.
The latest meeting between Trivedi and Modi is being closely watched in Dhaka and New Delhi as both sides seek to create conditions for renewed engagement and address outstanding bilateral issues through diplomatic dialogue.
