NEWS DESKMalaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has praised former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad for Malaysia's consistent support in Timor-Leste’s bid for full ASEAN membership. Anwar expressed his gratitude during his historic speech in the Timor-Leste National Parliament, despite Mahathir’s recent calls for Anwar’s resignation.
According to Malaysia's official news agency Bernama and several mainstream media outlets, Anwar Ibrahim acknowledged Malaysia's role in supporting Timor-Leste’s independence, starting from the early days of the struggle. Quoting Anwar, Malay Mail reported, "From the beginning of their fight for independence, Malaysia has stood by Timor-Leste. Many refer to the time when Mahathir Mohamad was Prime Minister, and he showed remarkable consistency during that period. Now, it is my responsibility to ensure that this inclusion process moves forward effectively."
Anwar also referred to Timor-Leste's Parliament as the "vibrant heart of democracy" and reassured the country of Malaysia’s strong support in achieving full ASEAN membership. "Timor-Leste's democratic journey is an inspiration for the entire region, transforming into a confident and independent state, overcoming adversity and inequality. The Parliament is the vibrant heart of democracy, an institution that should be cherished. I congratulate Timor-Leste for its strength, courage, and faith," Anwar said.
In his speech, Anwar highlighted the contributions of Timor-Leste’s leaders, including President Dr. José Ramos-Horta, who have always spoken for freedom and justice, even during the years of political repression. He remarked, "Who spoke out at the United Nations? Not the great powers, but leaders of small countries like Ramos-Horta."
On his two-day official visit, Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia’s strong commitment to Timor-Leste's ASEAN membership, stating there should be no delays in the process. "I will do everything possible to convince all ASEAN governments and leaders, using every tool at my disposal, to ensure Timor-Leste becomes a full member," Anwar added.
According to Channel News Asia (CNA), Timor-Leste is set to become ASEAN's 11th member in October.
