The inaugural journeys, lasting one to two nights, will depart from Riyadh and traverse approximately 1,300 km of existing railway lines. The concept was announced ahead of the Future Investment Initiative (FII) and unveiled to the public at FII9 in Riyadh, marking its formal entry into the next stage of development.
Its official launch for operations is targeted for late 2026, with initial journeys departing from Riyadh.
The train’s intended interiors are a blend of desert-inspired colors, carved wood, and Murano glass to evoke Saudi cultural motifs.
The project is in the advanced design and partnership phase, with construction and detailed fit-out of carriages expected to proceed in the run-up to the planned 2026 launch. The luxury train will feature 31 private suites, 2 presidential suites, 2 restaurant cars offering Michelin-level cuisine, and a central “Majlis” lounge, all accommodating up to 66 guests for overnight journeys.
The train will visit scenic desert landscapes and key heritage destinations, each itinerary curated for cultural and luxury experiences both on and off board. Guests will have access to two restaurant cars offering a choice between authentic local cuisine and international menus with Italian fusion influences, all curated to a Michelin-level standard. A central Majlis lounge will provide a space for socializing and relaxation.
The project began as a collaboration between Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) and Italy’s Arsenale Group, with involvement from the Ministry of Transport and Logistic Services, the Ministry of Culture, the Saudi Tourism Authority, and additional partners.
The Dream of the Desert project seeks to deliver world-class, ultra-luxury rail experiences for global and regional travelers who value authenticity and exclusivity, blending Saudi heritage and cultural immersion with modern Italian design and hospitality. By launching this project, Saudi Arabia is encouraging new investment in its transport and tourism sectors, showcasing its commitment to public–private partnerships and international collaboration.
The train’s curated itineraries are designed to highlight the Kingdom’s natural and historical destinations, including UNESCO World Heritage sites, increasing their appeal for high-end tourism and reinforcing the country’s cultural identity on a global stage
Paolo Barletta, CEO of Arsenale, said: “Dream of the Desert is a moving masterpiece born from the dialogue between Italian craftsmanship and Saudi vision.” He added: “It marks the beginning of a new global platform redefining ultra-luxury travel – one that celebrates heritage, creativity, and a deep respect for local identity while carrying the world’s most discerning travellers through the heart of Saudi Arabia’s landscapes and traditions.”
Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, Saudi Arabia’s minister of transport and logistics services and chairman of Saudi Arabia Railways, said the unveiling of the luxury train underscores the remarkable transformation of the Kingdom’s railway sector and its progress toward offering world-class travel experiences.
He added that the project stems from the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, which aims to introduce modern, tourism-focused transport options that enhance quality of life. Al-Jasser also noted that the initiative reflects rising foreign investment in the Kingdom’s transport and logistics ecosystem, supported by leading international partners.
