Allegations have surfaced against Albania’s Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku, accusing her of abusing power by interfering in public tenders and awarding contracts to specific companies.
The controversy triggered protests in front of Parliament in Tirana, where opposition activists gathered to demand accountability.
Police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the demonstrators, who reportedly responded by throwing stones at security personnel.
Authorities said 30 people have been arrested in connection with the unrest. Meanwhile, the opposition Democratic Party of Albania claimed that around 40 of its supporters had been detained.
Albania’s Interior Minister Albania Koçiu condemned the violence, describing acts of vandalism and attacks on police as unforgivable crimes.
