Iran’s Foreign Ministry has dismissed US allegations regarding its missile programme as a “big lie,” rejecting claims by US President Donald Trump that Tehran is developing missiles capable of striking the United States.
On Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said in a post on X that accusations concerning Iran’s nuclear programme, ballistic missiles and the number of casualties in the January unrest were a repetition of “big lies.”
Although Baghaei did not directly reference Trump in his post, his remarks came hours after the US president claimed that Iran seeks to develop missiles capable of reaching American soil.
In a February interview, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran does not possess the capability to target the United States directly. However, he warned that if the US were to attack Iran, it would respond by targeting American bases in the Middle East.
During his State of the Union address, Trump also stated that Iran would never be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. “The leaders of Tehran are once again pursuing their malign nuclear ambitions,” he said.
Iran has repeatedly insisted that it does not seek nuclear weapons but maintains that it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
Trump further alleged that Iranian authorities had killed 32,000 people during protests that began in December and peaked on January 8 and 9.
Iranian officials have acknowledged more than 3,000 deaths but claim the violence was driven by “terrorist activities” instigated by the United States and Israel.
The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) has documented more than 7,000 deaths, while noting that the actual toll could be significantly higher.
