Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has reportedly been taken to Moscow for emergency surgery after being seriously injured in an Israeli airstrike, according to claims by Kuwaiti media.
Following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in an Israeli airstrike in Tehran on February 28, Mojtaba Khamenei—his son—was selected as the country’s new top religious authority.
However, several media outlets later reported that Mojtaba Khamenei was also severely wounded in the same wave of Israeli attacks. He was reportedly admitted to Sina University Hospital in Tehran and has been in a coma since then.
A report by the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida now claims that his condition became critical, prompting Russian President Vladimir Putin to arrange for him to be transported to Russia for urgent medical treatment.
According to the report, the mission to evacuate Iran’s new ayatollah from the country was conducted under strict secrecy. He was allegedly flown to Moscow aboard a Russian military aircraft.
Al-Jarida further reported that Mojtaba Khamenei is being treated at one of Putin’s presidential residences, where he underwent what the outlet described as a “successful” surgery on his leg.
The report cited a “senior source” close to Iran’s new Supreme Leader who claimed that Mojtaba Khamenei was injured at the beginning of the U.S. military campaign known as “Operation Epic Fury.” With continued attacks by the United States and Israel, the source said it had become impossible to provide proper medical care inside Iran.
Another Iranian source reportedly told the outlet that one or possibly both of Mojtaba Khamenei’s legs had to be amputated. The source also claimed that his liver and stomach were severely damaged and that he is likely still in a coma.
According to the unnamed source, the treatment is being overseen by one of Iran’s leading trauma surgeons, Mohammad Reza Zafarghandi.
Meanwhile, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said during a press conference last Friday that he believes Mojtaba Khamenei has indeed been injured.
“We know the new Supreme Leader is wounded and may have suffered the loss of limbs,” Hegseth said.
Iranian officials have acknowledged that the country’s new leader was injured but have not provided further details about his condition.
Speaking anonymously to The Telegraph, an Iranian official said, “No one knows anything about Mojtaba Khamenei. There is no clear information about whether he is alive or dead.”
The official added that authorities have only been told he was wounded and that he is not currently in Iran, meaning he has no control over the ongoing war effort.
“Most commanders do not have any information about him,” the official said.
