On Tuesday, the United States carried out a precision strike on Kharg Island, a site critical to Iran’s oil exports. According to a senior US official, the attack targeted Iranian military facilities.

Iran’s semi-official news agency Mehr News Agency reported hearing a massive explosion on Kharg Island but did not provide further details.

Located in the Persian Gulf, Kharg Island is roughly one-third the size of Manhattan, yet it handles nearly 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports, making it vital to the country’s economy. In response to the US strike, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a strong warning, stating that if the United States crosses the “red line,” their restraint would end.

The IRGC statement emphasized that Tehran is prepared to take retaliatory action not only in the Middle East but beyond, asserting: “We will do something that will deprive the US and its allies of oil and gas from this region for many years.” They clarified that they will not initiate attacks on civilian sites, but will not hesitate to respond to such “despicable” actions.

Analysts warn that the current situation raises the risk of a large-scale conflict in the Middle East, potentially escalating regional instability.
