Iran is planning new legislation to strengthen military control over the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report by Al Jazeera.

The proposed law would give Iran’s armed forces full authority over the key shipping route. Ebrahim Azizi, head of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said the military already maintains control but now aims to formalize and expand its powers.

He added that Iran wants the ability to block vessels it considers “hostile” and is also considering requiring payments related to the strait to be made in its own national currency.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed that the United States has requested further talks regarding the ongoing conflict.

Speaking to reporters in Saint Petersburg, Araghchi said Iran is standing firm against what he described as the world’s most powerful country, adding that Washington has failed to achieve its objectives.

“As a result, they have requested more negotiations,” he said, noting that Iran is still considering whether to participate in further talks. There has been no immediate response from Washington.

Araghchi also said the conflict has demonstrated Iran’s strong alliances, particularly with Russia, and thanked the Kremlin for its continued support.
