North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has hailed the "supreme loyalty" of soldiers who chose death over being captured while fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine.
Speaking at the inauguration of a massive new memorial complex on the outskirts of Pyongyang, Kim declared that those who opted for "suicidal blasts" and self-sacrifice displayed the highest level of devotion to the state. This marks a rare official glorification of soldiers who used grenades or explosives to avoid falling into enemy hands.
The newly unveiled monument serves as both a cemetery and a museum, displaying the remains and personal belongings of fallen soldiers alongside bronze statues depicting heroic battle scenes. State media has recently amplified narratives of soldiers hugging each other before detonating explosives or ending their lives after being wounded to avoid interrogation. This campaign appears to be a strategic move to frame North Korea's military involvement in the Ukraine-Russia conflict as a noble and patriotic sacrifice.
While intelligence agencies and defectors have long claimed that North Korean troops are instructed to commit suicide rather than surrender, Kim’s public endorsement provides significant confirmation of this doctrine. With Western estimates suggesting thousands of North Korean casualties in Russia's Kursk region, this official recognition seeks to mitigate domestic backlash by transforming military losses into a narrative of ultimate heroism and national pride.
