A historic peace agreement between Iran and the United States will be signed in Geneva, Switzerland, this coming Friday, with Pakistan serving as the host and primary mediator.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif officially announced the breakthrough during a late-night address to the National Assembly on Monday (June 15). The landmark accord follows over three and a half months of intensive, quiet diplomacy brokered by Islamabad, marking a significant triumph for international diplomacy and global security.
Under the framework of the agreement, the US and Iran have agreed to a permanent cessation of hostilities, the lifting of US economic sanctions on Tehran, and the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Crucially, the pact also mandates an immediate and permanent halt to all military operations across all fronts, including the conflict in Lebanon. The crisis originally escalated in late February following US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, which was subsequently contained in early April through a Pakistan-brokered ceasefire that paved the way for direct talks in Islamabad.
Addressing the parliament, Prime Minister Sharif described the development as a historic milestone achieved after 106 days of relentless diplomatic efforts. He extended his gratitude to key global leaders who supported the peace process, including Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Chinese President Xi Jinping, alongside the UK and the European Union. Sharif praised the top leadership of both Washington and Tehran for demonstrating strategic patience and prudence in resolving the conflict through dialogue.
