More than 40 million people participated in the funeral and burial rituals of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei across Iran and Iraq, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed on Wednesday (July 15).

Brigadier General Hassan Hassanzadeh, commander of the IRGC’s Tehran Corps, disclosed the figures during an interview with the state-run Tasnim News Agency, citing combined attendance records from multiple major cities.

According to General Hassanzadeh, the massive turnout was recorded during the funeral processions and memorial services held in Tehran, Qom, Mashhad, as well as the Iraqi holy cities of Najaf and Karbala. The commander described the scale of the mourning ceremonies as a historic global event, asserting that the ocean of people across the five cities symbolized Islamic unity and the solidarity of the Axis of Resistance.

The final rituals attracted millions of mourners from across the region. Hassanzadeh noted that a significant number of devotees from countries including Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, and Kashmir traveled directly to Iran and Iraq to attend the funeral services and pay their respects.

The late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was laid to rest on July 9 at the holy shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad. The burial followed days of state-sponsored mourning ceremonies and massive processions that moved through key cities in both Iran and Iraq.
