US-Canada Trade War Escalates: Ottawa Imposes Retaliatory Tariffs on Over 700 American Products

The trade dispute between Washington and Ottawa has intensified significantly as the Canadian government announced retaliatory tariffs on over 700 American products. According to Al Jazeera, Ottawa is set to levy tariffs on US goods valued at 27.6 billion Canadian dollars ($19.9 billion) following the recent imposition of steep import duties by the United States administration.

Scheduled to take effect on September 8, these tariffs—ranging from 15% to 50%—will target key sectors including steel, aluminum, dairy, household appliances, and electronics.

The escalation follows the collapse of bilateral trade talks, after which US President Donald Trump announced a 50% tariff on Canadian goods, followed by additional duties on autos, trucks, and steel. Trump has also made provocative remarks, repeatedly referring to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as "Governor Carney" and alluding to Canada as a prospective 51st US state. While these protectionist measures aim to pressure Ottawa, research from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy indicates that 96% of the financial burden of these tariffs will ultimately fall on American importers and consumers due to soaring prices on everyday goods.

In response to the mounting economic pressures, the Canadian government has rolled out a robust 7.5-billion-dollar financial assistance package to support small and medium-sized enterprises affected by the standoff. Operating on a "dollar-for-dollar" principle, Canada's counter-measures underscore a deepening economic rift between the two neighbors, threatening broader supply chains across North America.
