Samirul Islam alleges that residents of Jyoti Nagar Colony are being deprived of water because they are Muslims and do not constitute a BJP vote bank.
A Rajya Sabha MP from West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) has sought the intervention of the United Nations human rights chief over allegations that Muslim residents of a locality in Kolkata are being denied access to drinking water.
Samirul Islam shared a copy of his letter on social media platform X, describing the crisis in Jyoti Nagar Colony as more than a municipal service issue, calling it a matter of fundamental human rights.
He alleged that water supplies had been withheld because the area is predominantly inhabited by Muslims and its residents do not form part of what he described as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) “vote bank”.
In his letter to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Islam argued that prolonged deprivation of adequate drinking water cannot be treated as an ordinary municipal problem.
He noted that access to safe drinking water and sanitation is recognised by the United Nations as a fundamental human right. The alleged crisis, he said, directly threatens the health, dignity and right to an adequate standard of living of Jyoti Nagar Colony’s residents.
The TMC MP stressed that residents were not seeking special privileges but were simply demanding a basic necessity essential for survival.
Islam also warned that a severe shortage of drinking water could increase the risk of infectious disease outbreaks, placing the health of poor and marginalised communities at particular risk.
He urged the UN human rights body to seek explanations and relevant information from the authorities concerned regarding the prolonged failure to ensure an adequate and regular supply of drinking water to residents of Jyoti Nagar Colony.
The allegations raise concerns over equitable access to essential public services and the protection of fundamental rights. However, the claims of discriminatory denial of water have not been independently established in the information provided.
