A local court in Delhi has granted bail to three leaders of India's Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on the condition that they refrain from any activities that could disturb public peace for one year.
The leaders — Abhijit Dipak, Sourav Das and Ashutosh Ranka — were detained after disembarking from an aircraft at Delhi airport on Saturday. Police formally arrested them on Sunday morning, NDTV reported.
The three leaders were produced before the Executive Magistrate's Court in Delhi Cantonment on Sunday morning.
The CJP had announced a protest for Saturday, demanding the resignation of India's Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls. The leaders were detained before the protest could begin.
Meanwhile, police detained more than 3,000 protesters, including former chief ministers, members of Parliament and state legislators, in connection with the demonstration. They were released late at night.
Authorities imposed extensive security arrangements around Jantar Mantar in central Delhi to prevent disorder during the CJP's planned protest on Saturday. Security was tightened at several locations across the capital, prompting protesters to split into smaller groups and stage demonstrations in different parts of the city.
Separately, India's Supreme Court is scheduled to hold a special hearing on Sunday on a petition alleging contempt of court over the complete suspension of Delhi Metro station operations and train services on Saturday.
Metro services resumed across Delhi on Sunday morning, although strict security measures remained in place at station entrances and exits. Police buses were also stationed nearby to transport detained protesters to police stations.
