Al Rayyan Mosque in Hatta has become the world’s first place of worship to achieve the prestigious LEED Zero Carbon certification, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority announced Thursday.
The recognition from the U.S. Green Building Council marks the mosque’s third global environmental achievement, after previously securing LEED Platinum and LEED Zero Energy certifications.
The mosque earned the distinction by offsetting 175 percent of its yearly carbon emissions through comprehensive sustainability measures.
The certification acknowledges net-zero carbon operations, positioning the Hatta landmark as a global model for environmentally conscious religious architecture.
The mosque first gained international attention in 2014 by becoming the world’s first LEED Zero Energy certified mosque, followed by LEED Platinum certification in 2021.
DEWA now maintains ten LEED-certified green buildings across Dubai, with commitments to expand sustainable construction practices throughout the emirate.
