Issuing passports for people is a common practice worldwide—but Saudi Arabia is taking an unusual step by planning to issue special “passports” for millions of camels across the country.

The Saudi government says the initiative is aimed at ensuring better management of the country’s vast camel population. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the move will help create a reliable database, improving efficiency and oversight in the camel-breeding sector.

On Tuesday, February 3, the ministry shared an image of the proposed camel passport on social media. The image shows a green-colored passport featuring Saudi Arabia’s national emblem along with a golden engraving of a camel on its cover.

Officials believe the passport system will help track ownership, health records, and movement of camels, which hold significant cultural, economic, and agricultural importance in Saudi Arabia.

The initiative has drawn attention both domestically and internationally for its novel approach to livestock management.
