Muslims in Malaysia will begin observing the holy month of Ramadan from Thursday, February 19. The announcement was made tonight by Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal.

In a statement broadcast live on national television, he said the start date of Ramadan was determined following moon-sighting efforts conducted at various locations across the country. This year, religious officials gathered at 29 locations nationwide to observe the new moon before confirming the beginning of fasting.

He further stated that the date was set for all states by decree of Malaysia’s King, Sultan Ibrahim. The final decision was announced after obtaining the consent of the Malay Rulers.

With the announcement, the Muslim community in Malaysia has begun preparations to welcome the holy month of fasting.
