The Election Commission (EC) has declared the nomination paper of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Md. Shafiqur Rahman valid for the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election in the Dhaka-15 constituency.
The decision was confirmed on Saturday (January 3) following scrutiny of nomination papers at the Election Training Institute (ETI) building in Agargaon, Dhaka. The verification was conducted by the Returning Officer and Regional Election Officer for Dhaka region, Md. Yunus Ali.
The Returning Officer said Dr. Shafiqur Rahman’s nomination was found to be in order, with all required documents properly submitted and no objections lodged against him, leading to the declaration of validity.
In the same constituency, the nomination of BNP-backed candidate Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton was also declared valid. A total of nine candidates submitted nomination papers in Dhaka-15. Of them, five were declared valid, three were rejected, and a decision on one candidate was deferred, the commission said.
Besides Dr. Shafiqur Rahman and Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton, the other candidates whose nominations were approved in Dhaka-15 are:
Md. Ashfaqur Rahman (Bangladesh JASAD),
Khan Shoaib Amanullah (Janatar Dal), and
AKM Shafiqul Islam (Gano Forum).
Nomination papers were rejected for CPB candidate Ahmad Sazedul Haque Rubel, Bangladesh Supreme Party candidate Mobarak Hossain, and independent candidate Tanzil Islam due to incomplete information and improper party endorsements. Meanwhile, the decision regarding Jatiya Party candidate Shamsul Haque has been kept pending pending verification of case-related information.
On the same day, scrutiny of nomination papers for the Dhaka-13 constituency was also completed. There, nominations of six candidates, including the BNP nominee, were declared valid, while five were rejected.
According to the EC’s election schedule, aggrieved candidates may appeal the Returning Officer’s decisions between January 5 and January 9. Appeals will be resolved between January 10 and January 18. The deadline for withdrawal of candidacy is January 20, symbols will be allotted on January 21, and election campaigning will begin on January 22.
