President Donald Trump has labeled Spain a "very bad partner" within the NATO military alliance and directed a total shutdown of all bilateral trade relations with the European nation.
The President made the announcement during a press briefing on Wednesday (July 8) on the sidelines of the ongoing NATO Summit in Ankara, Turkey, while standing alongside NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
The President confirmed that he has officially instructed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to halt all commercial interactions with Spain immediately. Criticizing Madrid's defense spending and contributions, Trump stated, "Spain is a failing country, and we no longer wish to conduct any form of commerce with them. They do not participate properly, and they do not pay their dues.
I want to entirely sever our economic relationship, suspend travel, and then we will see how quickly they try to return to us." Beyond the punitive measures against Spain, the President also voiced his deep dissatisfaction regarding NATO's stance on Greenland and used the platform to formally declare the complete termination of the administration's fragile ceasefire with Iran.
