A defamation case worth Tk 1 billion has been filed against Kushtia-3 (Sadar) Member of Parliament and Jamaat leader Amir Hamza for allegedly calling State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku an “atheist” and “anti-Islamic.”

The case was filed on Monday at the Sirajganj Sadar Cognizance Court by SM Nazmul Islam, former general secretary of the District Nationalist Lawyers’ Association.

Confirming the matter, plaintiff’s lawyer Hamidul Islam said that the court, presided over by Judge Suman Kumar Karmakar, has taken the case into cognizance and kept it pending for an order.

According to the plaintiff, Amir Hamza made derogatory remarks about the minister while commenting on a speech in which Tuku paid tribute to the Liberation War of 1971 and its freedom fighters. “Through his comments, the MP has severely defamed the honorable minister. I have sought justice against this wrongdoing,” Nazmul Islam said.

On March 26, Minister Tuku delivered a speech honoring the Liberation War and its freedom fighters. In response, during a discussion before Friday prayers at a central mosque in Kushtia Sadar, Amir Hamza allegedly referred to him as an “atheist” and “anti-Islamic.”

The remarks were later reported in a national daily newspaper and widely circulated on Facebook.
