Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held a courtesy meeting with Masumi Kakinoki, chairman of leading Japanese corporation Marubeni Corporation and president of the Japan-Bangladesh Committee for Commercial and Economic Cooperation (JBCCEC), on Monday at 3:45pm Japan local time.
During the meeting, the prime minister praised Kakinoki’s leadership in strengthening trade and economic cooperation between Bangladesh and Japan. He also thanked him for his role in expanding Japanese investment in Bangladesh and improving business ties between the two countries as chairman of Marubeni Corporation.
Tarique Rahman stressed the importance of further strengthening the economic partnership between Bangladesh and Japan.
Kakinoki expressed hope that effective implementation of the bilateral Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) would help expand trade, increase Japanese investment and create new business opportunities between the two countries.
The prime minister urged Japanese investors to increase investment in promising sectors in Bangladesh, including information and communication technology (ICT), renewable energy and advanced manufacturing.
“There are significant opportunities for investment in these sectors in Bangladesh through foreign direct investment and public-private partnership frameworks,” he said.
The prime minister also highlighted the importance of Japanese cooperation in modernising the Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO) and assessing the feasibility of establishing a second fertilizer factory in the country.
The government is committed to creating an investment-friendly environment, Tarique Rahman said, adding that it is working to expand opportunities for Japanese businesses through regulatory reforms, simplified investment approval procedures and stronger public-private partnerships.
Earlier, on October 11, a delegation led by Masayuki Omoto, president and chief executive officer of Marubeni Corporation, met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Dhaka.
At the meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office, the two sides discussed cooperation with Marubeni in information technology, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, fertilizer and energy, as well as ways to expand Japanese investment in Bangladesh.
