Russia and China have expressed deep concern over President Donald Trump’s order to the Pentagon to resume nuclear weapons testing. Both nuclear powers have warned that restarting U.S. nuclear tests could threaten global stability.
The sudden approval to resume nuclear tests, after a 33-year hiatus, has caused a stir in the international arena. World powers are now scrambling to adjust their strategies. In immediate reactions, nuclear-armed countries have voiced serious concerns.
Russia has stated that this U.S. move pushes the world back toward instability. The head of the Russian Parliament’s Defense Committee also said the decision creates new grounds for conflict and described it as a dangerous provocation.
China has reacted strongly as well. A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the United States must adhere to its international commitment to suspend nuclear testing. He warned that Washington’s unilateral action would disrupt the global strategic balance.
Iran has also strongly condemned the president’s order. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called Trump’s move “irresponsible.” In a message on social media platform X on Thursday night (October 30), he said: “By renaming the defense department as a war department, the nuclear-armed oppressive country is once again beginning its nuclear weapons testing program.”
Currently, nine countries in the world possess nuclear weapons. Russia has the largest arsenal, with about 5,500 warheads, while the United States has over 5,000. Together, these two countries own nearly 90% of the world’s nuclear weapons.
China possesses approximately 600 nuclear warheads. Security analysts fear that renewed arms competition among Russia, the United States, and China could increase this number further.
