China has agreed to purchase 200 aircraft from Boeing, with the potential for the order to expand to as many as 750 planes in the future, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said the deal currently includes “around 200 aircraft,” adding that the number could eventually increase to 750 if the agreement proceeds smoothly.
He also noted that the aircraft would be powered by engines manufactured by GE Aerospace. However, he did not provide details about the aircraft models involved or the delivery timeline.
Neither the Chinese government nor Boeing has officially confirmed the agreement so far. If finalized, the deal would mark a major breakthrough for Boeing, which has struggled to maintain its position in the Chinese market amid recent trade tensions between Washington and Beijing.
Boeing Chief Executive Officer Kelly Ortberg accompanied Trump during his visit to Beijing as part of a U.S. business delegation seeking to promote American goods and services in China.
It also remains unclear how many of the announced 200 aircraft represent new orders and how many are linked to previous commitments. Analysts noted that China has historically combined new and existing aircraft orders during high-profile visits by foreign leaders.
Industry experts say the large-scale agreement could help support China’s rapidly expanding aviation sector, especially as domestic manufacturer COMAC has yet to scale production of its C919 passenger jet to expected levels.
The deal is also expected to strengthen Boeing’s position against its European rival Airbus in the highly competitive global aircraft market.
According to aviation consultancy IBA, the potential value of the 200-aircraft agreement could range between $17 billion and $19 billion.
